Hugo Marques Receives Doctorate in Medical Imaging with Highest Grading

Hugo Marques, radiologist responsible for the Unit of Cardiovascular CT and MR Imaging from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, defended his doctorate dissertation last 16th March, at Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, earning the unanimous approval of the jury, that bestowed him the highest grading.

The doctorate, in the specialty of Surgery and Morphology (Medical Imaging), is the first in the area to be obtained by a Hospital da Luz Lisboa physician. His mentors were professors João Martins Pisco, João Goyri O’Neill and Pedro Aragão, from Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

The thesis had for theme “CT evaluation of left auricle and pulmonary vessels – Anatomo-clinical context”, and was presented to a jury integrating professors Fernando Miguel Xavier, João Goyri O’Neill and Rui Mateus Marques, from Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Luís Caseiro Alves and Paulo Romão Donato, from Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Coimbra, and Ana Maria Gomes de Almeida, from Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa.

In the works supporting the thesis, Hugo Marques developed a nomogram for the evaluation of the left auricle of the heart in mid-diastolic phase by CT (computed tomography) and application of that information in patients with auricular fibrillation (the most prevalent chronic arrhythmia affecting 2.5% of the Portuguese population over 40).
“The applicability of this nomogram to patients with auricular fibrillation was tested, allowing to identify all patients with auricular fibrillation and left auricle enlargement”, concluded Hugo Marques.
The radiologist discovered “an anatomic marker (the draining pattern of right pulmonary vessels – R2a), with significant and independent relevance in the relapse rate after atrial fibrillation percutaneous ablation”, which may allow to adapt/modify the ablative procedure according to that information, in order to optimize it and reduce relapse rates.

Hugo Marques conciliates his medical activity with teaching and research, being guest assistant at Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, besides author and co-author of about 30 papers published in national and international scientific reviews.
