Hospital da Luz Lisboa Digestive Endoscopy on BTV
David Serra, gastroenterologist and coordinator of Hospital da Luz Lisboa Center of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy, was interviewed on program “Em Linha”, on Benfica TV, broadcasted on July 15, focusing on the prevention and treatment of various diseases of the digestive tract.
The physician started by identifying gastroenterology as a medical speciality dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of digestive tract diseases, namely of the esophagus, stomach and intestine, as well as of organs related, such as the liver, biliary tract and pancreas.
David Serra referred the direct influence of lifestyles, namely unbalanced diet, sedentarism or smoking, for the increase in the number of cases of benign or oncologic pathology of the digestive system. For that increase also contributes a better diagnostic capacity enabled by modern techniques of digestive endoscopy.
Colorectal cancer is one of those diseases of the digestive system influenced by lifestyle and having a growing prevalence in the country, said David Serra, stressing the fact of this being a pathology that can be easily detected and even early treated by colonoscopy, which at Hospital da Luz Lisboa is performed in 99% of the cases with sedation, thus not being an uncomfortable exam for patients.
The physician recommended this exam above 50 years old, or earlier if the patient is included in a family risk group, and emphasized that there are 10 thousand new cases of colorectal cancer every year, in the country, with 3000 to 4000 deaths due to late detection.
For the coordinator of Hospital da Luz Center of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy, digestive endoscopy allows, among other diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities, to detect the presence of bacteria that are a risk factor of digestive cancer, such as Helicobacter pylori, which infects the stomach of 85% of the population, or to diagnose celiac disease.
