Hospital da Luz Anesthesiology team participate in international study

The Anesthesiology Department at Hospital da Luz will take part in the PROBESE study, a multicenter clinical trial involving hospitals around the world, on anesthesia in surgeries performed on obese patients, an area in which the hospital has extensive experience.

The researchers responsible for this trial at Hospital da Luz are doctors Cristina Pestana, deputy director of the Department of Anesthesiology, and João Gouveia, but the entire anesthesiology team will be involved in collecting data for the study.

The PROBESE study involves patients with a BMI (body mass index) over 35 kg/m2 who undergo surgery under general anesthesia lasting longer than one hour. The Hospital da Luz anesthesiology team has considerable experience in this area, having performed to date 736 bariatric surgeries (obesity surgery) and many other procedures on patients with these characteristics.
