Hospital da Luz Scientific Study Distinguished Internationally

A multicentric study coordinated by cardiologists António Ferreira, from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, and Pedro Freitas, from Hospital de Santa Cruz, was distinguished as best clinical scientific communication at the 22nd congress of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, which took place in Seattle (USA), from 6 to 9 February. This was the first time a Portuguese team was distinguished.

The study, co-authored by radiologist Hugo Marques and cardiologist Nuno Cardim, both from UNICA, the Unit of Cardiovascular Imaging via CT and MR from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, included patients from that unit and two other Portuguese hospitals, and from a Brazilian unit. The research conducted by António Ferreira and colleagues aims to improve the method of evaluation of sudden cardiac death risk in patients with hypertrophic myocardiopathy, a genetic disease affecting approximately one in 500 people.

This work competed against works from Harvard, Cedars Sinai Hospital (Los Angeles), North-western University (Chicago) and Karolinska Institute (Sweden).
