Hospital da Luz Lisboa and SL Benfica Prepare Consensus on Sports Cardiology

Hospital da Luz Lisboa and SL Benfica gathered, on June 24, at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, more than 20 specialists in Cardiology and Sports Medicine, in a work meeting to elaborate consensus on Sports Cardiology.

The document resulting from this initiative between Hospital da Luz Lisboa, official medical services partner of SL Benfica, and the Portuguese “red” football club, will serve as basic support for any physician responsible for screening cardiac diseases in athletes, but also as guideline for the practice of exercise in cardiac disease patients.

In the news story on Benfica TV, João Paulo Almeida, SL Benfica’s Medical Officer, highlighted the fact of this being the first time that such consensus are considered on Sports Cardiology in Portugal, essentially aiming at the uniformization of evaluation criteria and harmonization of decision aspects to avoid discrepancies in diagnosis interpretation.

On the other hand, José Roquette, Clinical Director of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, stated that the consensus to achieve involve several sporting disciplines and different ages of practitioners, emphasizing the fact that there is a lot of information on the subject in the country, however not registered and documented in the form of consensuses.
