"Ordem dos Médicos" Grants Medal of Merit to José Roquette

The  "Ordem dos Médicos" distinguished the clinical director from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, José Roquette, with the Medal of Merit, “for his activity and personal merit” and for his contribution “to the dignification of the medical profession, Medicine in general and Humanity”.

With this distinction, the Portuguese Association of Doctors pays homage to the professional career and role in Portuguese and world medicine of José Roquette, specialist in cardiothoracic surgery and, since 2006, clinical director of Hospital da Luz Lisboa, the largest Portuguese private hospital. Roquette is also, presently, president of Luz Saúde Clinical Superior Council, which integrates Hospital da Luz Lisboa and gathers today over 20 healthcare units.

Previously to assuming functions at Hospital da Luz, José Roquette was director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service from Hospital de Santa Marta, in Lisbon, president of the Education Committee and Director of Medical Internship at the same hospital, president of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialty College of the Portuguese Association of Doctors and founding member of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery, having assumed different roles in the direction of the Portuguese Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.

Together with the clinical director from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, physicians João Lobo Antunes (posthumously) and Daniel Sampaio were also distinguished, among others.

Coimbra was the city elected by the Portuguese Association of Doctors for the organization of its 20th National Congress and of the 11th National Congress of Interns. The theme of this congress was “The Relationship Doctor-Patient: Patrimony of Humanity”, in the purpose of debating ways to improve the relationship between doctors and patients, at all levels.
