Hospital da Luz Lisboa Specialist in TVI Shows
Filipa Osório, Hospital da Luz gynaecologist, participated last October 23 in the TV show “A Tarde é Sua”, on TVI Channel, hosted by Fátima Lopes, where she explained what is endometriosis, how this disease manifests itself and what are the possible therapies.
Endometriosis is a chronic disease, where there is development of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium), in various locations outside this organ, forming benign masses of different dimension.
In those various extrauterine locations, this tissue suffers transformations similar to those occurring in the uterus during the menstrual cycle, often translating into pain and infertility.
According to Filipa Osório – who is specialist in minimally invasive surgery in patients with endometriosis, uterine myoma and benign pathology –, the origin of endometriosis has not yet been established, estimated to affect one in every six women.
The most consensual conclusion in the medical community is that it may be related with a fail in the immunity system, its manifestations being triggered by external factors (like stress, for instance).
“Hormone therapy can turn it somehow dormant”, referred the gynaecologist, noting that “only a third of women with endometriosis may have problems getting pregnant”. And “only in particular cases, surgery is indicated; that is to say, having endometriosis does not mean one has to be operated”, she added.
In the World Menopause Day, on October 18, Filipa Osório had already participated in the TV show “Diário da Manhã”, a news program on TVI24 Channel, where she explained that period of life of women, its symptoms and adequate therapies.
