Molecular Medicine Department at the Hospital da Luz Receives European Accreditation
Following recognition by the Portuguese Medical Board for providing training to medical students in 2010, the Department of Molecular Medicine has now received accreditation as a training center for the specialty of nuclear medicine by the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM).
Founded in 1985, The European Association of Nuclear Medicine is the umbrella organization of nuclear medicine in Europe and represents the sector in European institutions. Within this role, the EANM aims to advance science and education in nuclear medicine for the benefit of public health. In addition, the association promotes and coordinates, throughout Europe and beyond, discussion and the exchange of ideas relating to the diagnosis, treatment, research and prevention of diseases through the use of unsealed radioactive substances and the properties of stable nuclides in medicine.
The accreditation of the Department of Molecular Medicine was achieved following assessments of their clinical activities, research, training, and integration with other departments in the Hospital da Luz.
In 2011, the Department of Molecular Medicine will receive their first medical intern to be trained in the use of PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography with Computerized Tomography).
