National Award of Gastroenterology Presented to HBA Physician

Joana Torres, specialist of the Gastroenterology Service of Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA), received the National Award of Gastroenterology 2017, conferred by the Portuguese Society of the specialty, for the work “Farnesoid x receptor expression in microscopic colitis: a potential role in disease ethiopathogenesis”.

The award was presented in the opening session of the Digestive Week 2017, taking place in the Algarve until June 10 and gathering about 700 national specialists in the area, therefore being, according to the commission organizing the event, “the forum of excellence for the scientific societies approaching the diseases of the digestive system”.

This physician from HBA had already been distinguished in 2016 with the award of Dean’s Healthcare System Icahn School of Medicine, for the results of a research on inflammatory bowel disease, in the scope of the MECONIUM study developed at Hospital Mont Sinai, in New York.

It was also for the results of another study, the PREDICTIS project of Jean-Fredéric Colombel team, also developed at Mont Sinai, that Joana Torres received another distinction last year. Besides Joana Torres, the Digestive Week 2017 counted with the presence and participation of several specialists, physicians and surgeons, from Luz Saúde Group units, as well as Luz Saúde CEO, Isabel Vaz.

In the session on “A new management to evaluate healthcare”, held in the first day of the event, where she was one of the guest speakers, Isabel Vaz sustained that the management of healthcare will be increasingly focused on the patient – in a time where information technologies allow patients to have active voice in the whole process of healthcare providing –, but with a clear “medical guidance”, ensuring quality decisions for higher benefit of patients, as she explained to News Pharma.

In this session, moderated by the president of the Portuguese Medical Board, Miguel Guimarães, the clinical director of the Department of Surgery of HBA and assistant director of Hospital da Luz Lisboa (HLL), Rui Maio, was also one of the speakers. The surgeon made a presentation where he explained what are and how are evaluated PROM and PREM (Patient Reported Outcome and Experience Measures), a means of evaluation of clinical results and healthcare, where patients also participate.

This is a model of evaluation and continuing improvement of healthcare provided, ever more useful for professionals and increasingly used in health services of countries with more developed systems, such as the British NHS.

Marília Cravo, director of the Gastroenterology Service of HBA and assistant coordinator of HLL Oncology Centre, and the gastroenterologist Catarina Fidalgo, also from HBA and HLL, were other guest speakers at this Digestive Week 2017.
