Hospital da Luz Lisboa Work Distinguished by Mayo Clinic

Sara Viana Baptista, otorhinolaryngologist at Hospital da Luz, received last April 9 the 2nd prize awarded to independent research communications on voice by Mayo Clinic, in the United States (“3rd Annual Southwest Laryngology Conference – Focus on Vocal Disorders 2016”).

Adam Klein (MD, FACS), director of the Emory University Voice Center, and Joseph Stemple (PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHAF), from the University of Kentucky, were part of the jury.

The work distinguished, entitled “Vocal changes in thyroid surgery. Much more than recurrent laryngeal nerve affection”, resulted from research developed at Hospital da Luz Lisboa integrated in Sara Viana Baptista’s doctoral project on “Vocal affection in thyroid surgery”, at Nova Medical School in Lisbon, in collaboration with Mayo Clinic Voice Center in Phoenix. 

In this project, started in 2014, are co-researchers Olimpia Cid, surgeon general, and Sancha Almeida, speech therapist, also from Hospital da Luz Lisboa.

Sara Viana Baptista is an otorhinolaryngologist at Hospital da Luz Lisboa and Hospital da Luz Clínica de Oeiras, since 2007. She is responsible for the consultation service of voice pathology at Hospital da Luz Lisboa and for the otorhinolaryngology unit at Hospital da Luz Clínica de Oeiras.
