Innovative treatment of achalasia at the Hospital da Luz

Since the beginning of the year, the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Center at the Hospital da Luz has been performing the technique of peroral endoscopic myotomy for treatment of achalasia.

Currently, this Center is the only one in Portugal that performs this innovative technique.

There are several treatment options for achalasia; pharmacological, endoscopic and surgical. The surgery (open or minimally invasive) has hitherto been the treatment of choice where indicated, with positive results in about 90% of cases.

The new technique of peroral endoscopic myotomy has generated results that go beyond the surgical treatment, registering success rates reaching 95% and avoiding surgical scars.

The patient is hospitalized and the procedure is conducted under general anesthesia taking about two hours. The average length of hospital stay is two to three days.
