Pharmaceutical Services

Pharmaceutical Services

Hospital da Luz Lisboa Pharmaceutical Services engage in a series of technically varied activities using a highly qualified and specialized team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and operational and administrative assistants. We use the full range of medicines to achieve the best therapeutic results with maximum safety for patients.

Pharmaceutical Services (PS) are responsible for making the full range of medical resources — drugs and other pharmaceutical products – available to the different departments at the Hospital da Luz.

With their technical, management and clinical skills, pharmacists are involved in all the processes of selection, acquisition, information, preparation and distribution of the thousands of medicines and pharmaceutical products needed daily.

In the different stages of this process, PS uses advanced technology, including specialized equipment and software, which not only guarantees the quality of medicines produced and services rendered, but frees up resources for more patient-oriented activities.

The electronic clinical process means that the clinical pharmacy team, which forms part of the multidisciplinary team of the respective clinical services on a daily basis, can carry out a thorough evaluation of the medication profile and its suitability before it is submitted to the infirmary and administered to the patient.

Within its production unit, the PS annually prepares approximately 2,900 chemotherapy treatments and 600 nutritional intravenous drips, and monitors individual patients in treatment.

There are three main areas of activity undertaken by the Hospital da Luz pharmaceutical team:

  • Patient-oriented Pharmaceutical Care - involving multidisciplinary teams of health professionals based on professionalism and respect, with participation in meetings and clinical visits, joint responsibility for results obtained from the therapy carried out by ensuring an environment that promotes effective communication, the rational use of medicines and the safety and effectiveness of therapy at the lowest cost.
  • Education and training – the team is responsible for the guidance of student internships on the Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in collaboration with the University of Lisbon Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra Faculty of Pharmacy, Instituto de Ciências da Saúde Egas Moniz, Lusófona University and University of the Algarve, a total of about 20 students per year. They also coordinate professional internships to pharmacists, general practitioners or in specific areas in which they intend to develop, and internships under the Erasmus Program. Trainers are regularly engaged in internal and external courses.
  • Clinical research – involves research teams from several clinical studies, in areas such as oncology, internal medicine and endocrinology. They also produce studies and research papers.
