HBA Physicians Paper Published in Oncology International Journal
The Journal of Oncology and Pharmacy Practice, the official journal of the International Society for Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP), specialized in training health professionals in oncology, published last October an article by a group of physicians from Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA), on the toxic effects of chemotherapy treatment in colorectal cancer.
The author of the paper is an oncology intern, João Godinho, with the collaboration of Mafalda Casa Nova (specialist in oncology), Teresa Mesquita, Maria João Baptista and Francisco Araújo (specialists in internal medicine), José Vale (director of the Neurology Service) and José Luís Passos Coelho (director of the HBA and Hospital da Luz Lisboa Oncology Department).
The article describes the neurologic toxicity (toxic encephalopathy) induced in a male 77-year-old patient with colon cancer, treated with adjuvant chemotherapy with oxaliplatin and capecitabine. The authors refer that, although rarely, these medications may cause neurologic dysfunction, so it must be considered when prescribed.
