The teams of Surgical Oncology and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery from Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim, composed of surgeons Flávio Videira , Fernando Martins and Miguel Choupina Pereira , successfully performed a complex breast surgery. The minimally invasive and video-assisted intervention consisted in a mastectomy with preservation of the skin and nipple-areola complex, associated to immediate breast reconstruction and prostheses placement. This is a technically demanding procedure resorting to an optical system (endoscope) that is inserted through a small incision, allowing a precise approach of the mammary gland with similar safety to conventional surgery. Among its main advantages, we can highlight: A better visualization of the anatomical structures by the surgeon. Minimal incisions, which have multiple benefits – namely, more extensive preservation of the blood vessels and cutaneous casing of the breast, reduction of pain, sensitivity alterations, and global risk of complications. Immediate breast reconstruction, enabling to achieve excellent aesthetical and functional results, with higher comfort for the patient in post-operative phase, less complications and better recovery. Smaller and concealed scars, hight safety in tissue preservation and a natural aesthetical result. The performance of this procedure at Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim reflects the commitment of the institution in surgical innovation, technical differentiation and excellence in healthcare provided, always centred on safety, clinical rigor, and patient quality of life.
