Cancer is a common disease nowadays, the World Health Organization estimating it to affect one in five people throughout life but having benefited from significant advances in Medicine. Therefore, it is increasingly important to promote awareness among the population on how to prevent, early diagnose and better treat cancer. Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim invites the general population to participate in this Oncology Meeting being held next November 21. The initiative – free of charge but requiring previous registration – will bring to the stage of the hospital’s auditorium specialists of the Oncology Centre and other health professionals. Over the course of the day, they will explain the best practices and the advances registered in diagnosis and treatment, be it in private or public institution, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and individualized follow-up. Matilde Salgado and Bruno Feiteira, respectively coordinator and responsible nurse of the Oncology Centre, will be the hosts of the meeting under the motto: “Myths and facts: the oncologic disease in private hospital”. The program will focus on five thematic areas: Breast cancer (with general surgeons Fernando Martins and José Flávio Videira , radiologist Ana Galiza and oncologist Matilde Salgado as speakers); Haematological tumours (gathering haematologists Cláudia Lopes Pedrosa and Patrícia Seabra in a debate moderated by internist António Furtado ); Prostatic cancer (counting with interventions by oncologist Joana Febra , urologist Jorge Pinheiro , the clinical director of the hospital, and nurse Miguel Arteiro, besides the internist Luís Grangeia ); Lung cancer (gathering radiologists Paulo Brandão and João Macedo , oncologist Marta Vilaça and also Conceição Souto Moura, from Unilabs); The role of palliative care (which will be discussed by general and family doctor Pedro Coutinho , nurses Sofia Barbosa and Bruno Feiteira, and internist Hugo Oliveira, from Hospital Pedro Hispano). This initiative is destined to the general population, but also to all health professionals interested in updating knowledge on the best practices and innovation concerning the approach to cancer.
