Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim and Hospital da Luz Clínica de Cerveira join the Pink October initiative – the month dedicated to the fight against breast cancer – and will offer free screenings all month long. This special campaign is exclusively destined for women from 45 to 50 years old, all those interested being require to register previously on MY LUZ. The screening consultations will be ensured by general surgeons José Flávio Videira and Fernando Martins , specialized in breast diseases. On the scheduled day, the participants should bring along any exams carried out before, namely mammography and/or breast ultrasound. Breast cancer is the most frequent oncological disease and the first cause of death by cancer in women , in Portugal, with about 9 thousand new cases detected every year. With an early diagnosis and proper treatment, breast cancer is curable in most patients, being essential to raise awareness to the importance of prevention and divulge information and forms of support to patients and families. October is the month where institutions all over the world work towards developing campaigns raising awareness to the importance of prevention and early diagnosis in the fight against breast cancer, pink having been adopted as the distinctive colour. The Pink October movement was born in the United States, in the 90s, and since then the colour pink is used globally in such initiatives and also to pay tribute to women suffering or having suffered from breast cancer. With this initiative, Hospital da Luz reinforces its commitment to promote women’s health and to support the community. If you are a woman between 45 and 50 take the opportunity.
