Hospital da Luz Coimbra – Spine Center organized, last November 24, a multidisciplinary course on positioning in spine surgery, with the participation of national and foreign specialists. The “Masterclass to Share Best Practices in Prone Positioning” resulted from a partnership between BIRTH organization (Bennetts International Research Trust in Healthcare), Hospital da Luz Learning Health and the Biomedical Simulation Centre from Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra. “This training, involving professionals from different areas and destined to physicians in the specialities of Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and Anaesthesiology, as well as nurses of operating room and units of spine pathology, had for purpose to share knowledge on the best practice in positioning on spine surgery”, explains orthopaedist Luís Teixeira (in the photo above, the first from left), the director of Hospital da Luz – Spine Center and mentor of this masterclass. In its theoretical component, the masterclass included several communications by specialists in the area of spine, who shared the most recent knowledge on positioning in surgery. The practical and interactive component took place in operation room environment, where it was possible for participants to simulate a few cases proposed. “All knowledge and every practice here explained converge towards a common goal, that of improving safety and protection for patient during surgery”, adds Luís Teixeira. Besides Luís Teixeira, participated in this course specialists such as Jan Cernovsky (anaesthesiologist from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital), Paul Bennetts (from BIRTH) and Maia Gonçalves (orthopaedist from Hospital da Luz Arrábida and Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim). For Paul Bennett, from BIRTH, the event “represented a unique opportunity for learning in the area of Prone Positioning”.
