Ferreira Santos in Editorial Comment of Cardiology Journal

José Ferreira Santos, clinical director and cardiologist at Hospital da Luz Setúbal, is the author of an editorial comment in February edition of Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia, a publication of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology. The paper approaches the results of an observational study published in this journal, analysing the options of treatment of patients with myocardial infarction. In these cases, according to Ferreira Santos, “multivessel revascularization should be the rule” – that is to say, ideally and in patients with acute myocardial infarction, all arteries affected by atherosclerotic disease should be treated.

Coronary angioplasty, a technique that allows desobstruction of the affected arteries, can and should be applied in the different areas affected. It has been shown to be “a safe strategy with significant impact on the reduction of risk of recurrent events after acute myocardial infarction”.

The study, entitled “Multivessel revascularization in acute coronary syndrome without supra-unleveling ST segment: should it be the rule in all patients?” (Revascularização multivaso na síndrome coronária aguda sem supradesnivelamento do segmento ST: deve ser a regra em todos os doentes?) and the respective editorial comment can be consulted here
