With approximately 8 million euros, Hospital da Luz Lisboa is the fifth hospital institution in Portugal investing the most in Research and Development projects (R&D), according to the Inquiry on the National Scientific and Technological Potential (IPCTN) now published by the General Directorate of Education and Sciences Statistics. According to the same document, Hospital da Luz remains the private group with the highest investment in R&D. The IPCTN 2024: Provides a list of the 20 hospital institutions (in both public and private sectors) with the highest expenditure in R&D activities registered in 2024. Overall, these 20 entities represent 93% of expenditure and 91% of human resources in R&D of the total of hospital entities inquired. Expenditure is mainly distributed over three major areas: Clinical Medicine (65%), Health Sciences (26%), and Basic Medicine (6%). Hospital da Luz Lisboa arises in the fifth place in the global ranking with a total investment of €7,998.500. As in previous years, it is the private group with the largest investment volume in R&D. Disaggregating expenditures by R&D area, Hospital da Luz tops the list of hospital institutions investing the most (with 3.9 million euros) in Health Sciences and arises in fourth place (with 3.9 million euros) in the ranking of institutions with the largest investment in Clinic Medicine. Research and innovation in healthcare providing are strategic areas for Luz Saúde, the group that holds Hospital da Luz Network, being developed by Hospital da Luz Learning Health. It integrates the Test Beds national network for innovating products of national startups and SME, and is partner of the Clinical Academic Centre Católica-Luz with Universidade Católica Portuguesa and União das Misericórdias Portuguesas.
